I loved this line. And I loved how Pella corrected Schwartz, telling him Emerson’s wife’s name was Ellen. But I find it ironic how Harbach could write such a poignant line so early on and yet disappoint me as much as he did with Pella’s storyline and development. I mean—she basically only lived so Schwartz and her father could grow.

But her character was incredibly self-aware about how she was stretched between the men in her life—Guert, Schwartz, David—that I can’t deny he hasn’t given his task of writing a 23-year-old female character some thought. But, since he must have thought a lot about it, why didn’t he do a better job writing her?

I’m just really conflicted about it all.

If nothing else, this book as a film would not pass the Bechdel test.
